‡@ Outline of Ochanomizu University

1) Characteristics and History

Ochanomizu University, founded as Tokyo Womenfs Normal School in Ochanomizu (now referred to as Yushima, Bunkyo-ku), has graduated more than 22,000 female

leaders into virtually every field in society for nearly 130years. Notable among them were excellent scholars, especially those with achievements in natural science  studies, and brilliant educational experts. Since the inception in 1875, the university has led the way in womenfs education as the first-ever national institution of higher education for women.

The mission of Ochanomizu University is to educate women able to contribute significantly to societyfs greater good by disseminating knowledge, organizing in-depth research and educational activities and raising studentsf academic andethical standards with practical sense, and thus, to produce a highly developed culture. Under the educational system reform in 1949, the institution became a comprehensive university with three faculties. Since then, the university has been continually growing and expanding. To be ever receptive to the constantly shifting currents of the times, the university has been vitalizing research and teaching for undergraduates, as well as the development of the graduate program and the introduction of new on-campus facilities for collaborative research.

The fact that the university is comparatively a small institution as a university with multifaceted academic programs ensures individually–tailored instruction with detailed assistance for each student. This makes academic experience at Ochanomizu University something valuable and special; learning in small@classes helps students mature as fully independent, self-reliant women.
